Application for Academic Forgiveness

Southwestern Michigan College’s Academic Forgiveness program is designed to give a fresh start to students who have been away from the college for a period of at least five years or more and who return with the intent of completing a degree or certificate. This application initiates your request to have unsatisfactory grades excluded from the calculation of your overall grade point average (GPA). Please know that all course attempts and grades, whether forgiven or not, are computed into financial aid calculations for aid eligibility.

Prior to completing the application, please review the eligibility requirements. Each eligibility requirement must be satisfied in order for your application to receive consideration.

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. The applicant must be currently enrolled at SMC.
  2. The student’s GPA must have been below a 2.0 prior to re-matriculation to SMC.
  3. The student must not have enrolled with SMC for a period of at least 5 years prior to re-matriculation.
  4. The student must have completed at least 12 credits with SMC since re-matriculation with a GPA of at least 2.0 or better (not including performance-based or developmental courses).
  5. The student has never been granted academic forgiveness previously through SMC.

If you meet each of these requirements, please complete the application below.
